The End of an Era

Larry Munson to retire immediately (Athens Banner-Herald)

Sanford Stadium will be a mess Saturday night when Larry's voice hits the night air just before the kickoff vs Alabama in a raucous atmosphere. The radio airwaves in Georgia will never be the same.

Feel free to comment on your favorite Munson calls of all time.

I'll get it favorite Munson line is one that is often forgotten. The year was 1975, same year I was born. The game was in Jacksonville. The call...

"Appleby just stopped, planted his feet and threw it, Washington caught it thinking of Montreal and the Olympics, and ran out of his shoes 80 yards. Stadium rocking, stunned, the girders are bending now.."

My favorite has always been "Run Lindsey, Run!" But my favorite rub it in your face quote was a few years ago when Tennessee fumbled with about 10 sec before the half, on Ga 2 yard line, in Knoxville and we run it back for a TD and Munson says "Lady Luck just laughed out loud right there!"

I really thought I'd shed a tear when this day happened. I haven't yet, but I know I will when the tribute happens in Sanford Stadium. I STILL get chills EVERY time I see and hear the pre-game Larry montage.

"Look at the sugar falling out of the sky. Look at the sugar falling out of the sky." Has got to be my favorite. When I was young I can remember my mom repeating that line. It's wierd, I don't remember much when I was that age, but I remember that. I didn't have any idea what it meant.

I think it goes without saying that the hobnail boot call is his best "recent" work. He ended up apoligizing for using God and Lord so much, but it wouldn't have been as good any other way.

Don't you get the grave feeling that Larry's time on this Earth is waning? For that is truly sad, but in death is gain. My words can't describe how much he's meant to the Bulldawg Nation.

I have 2:

The '95 Peach Bowl when Jason Ferguson returned the UVA fumble for a TD with a minute to go to tie the game. I believe it was Armin Love that caused that fumble? I was driving by myself on I-75 through Tennessee on my way to Athens when Munson made that call. I had to pull over and park the truck on the side of the interstate...almost wrecked. If UVA would have not returned the ensuing kickoff for the winning score to end the Goff years, I believe it would be a well known call. I still have never heard that call again.

The 2nd is the hobnail boot call. It was a great day in my life. I couldn't hear it live. I remember briefly thinking to myself at the end of that game, "I wonder what Munson said." Sure enough his call ended up being better than I could have ever imagined. My favorite part of that call was the Big Orange suicide watch when Munson urged "check the Tennessee River!"

On the run lindsey run call, I love when he apologizes and then explains "I didn't mean to beg Lindsey to run...but I had to." Classic.
