Countdown to UGA-GSU: 29 Days

#29 Makiri Pugh, DB
5-10, 195, Charlotte NC (Independence HS), True Freshman
An underrated DB from a solid NC high school program that also produced Joe Cox and Mohammed Massaquoi for the Dawgs, Pugh was recruited mostly by ACC schools (Clemson, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Duke and Maryland) before deciding to jump on his UGA offer. Blessed with incredible speed (solid 4.4), Pugh can project as either a safety or cornerback long term, either of which will likely depend on where he ends up size-wise. It seems that UGA recruited him thinking he would end up at corner, but will likely work him out in both DB spots in the coming months.
Depth Chart Analysis: Almost a certain redshirt. The Dawgs may actually have a dilemna they are faced with at corner and safety in the coming years, depending on how players like Pugh, Sanders Commings, Brandon Boykin, and Bacarri Rambo progress. One or more of those 4 will probably find themselves starting in the defensive backfield 2 years from now. It wouldn't hurt to redshirt all 4 of these guys, if we can get away with it. Pugh looks like a solid long-term prospect that probably won't make his biggest impact for the UGA program until starting in 2010.

I'm hoping Pugh and Boykin both get PT this year. We need to get them experience, at the very least on special teams.

Cuff, Pugh and Boykin are the future at corner. We need to groom them now.

I tend to agree with you anon. I like when a couple db's get early pt and experience. It provides added depth in the secondary, especially in the nickle package, and provides more top end athletic ability to the special teams.

Tim Jennings comes to mind when thinking of someone who really took advantage of this. I think Cuff is the next star too that got thrown in the fire early.
