Countdown to UGA-GSU: 26 Days

#26 Tony Wilson, FL
5-11, 200, Daytona Beach FL (Mainland HS), RS Soph.
As a high school senior, most recruiting services listed Wilson as an "athlete", which is basically a fancy way of saying nobody knows where he's going to end up playing. He was quite a highly recruited "athlete", choosing the Dawgs over Michigan, Florida, Tennessee, Florida State, Oklahoma, and Georgia Tech. After a redshirt in his first season in Athens, Wilson settled in at receiver, packed on about 25 lbs and came to camp ready to contribute after receiving the Most Improved Wide Receiver Award out of spring practice. He was largely inconsistent in 2007, catching 14 balls for 124 yards. A key drop late in the South Carolina game hurt bad in that game. His biggest game was at Vanderbilt, where he caught 4 balls for 57 yards, the biggest catch coming on what I think was Stafford's best throw of the year, a 26 yard reception on the final drive in Nashville (Wilson actually fumbled after the catch, but unbelievably the ball bounced right back into his arms.)
Depth Chart Analysis: Tony enters the season as the #2 flanker behind Massaquoi, but will have every chance to be a major contributor for 2008. He'll have to hold off a slew of players including some very highly touted freshmen to stay in the #2 spot, but he has that experience that is so important to Coach John Eason. He'll get his chances. There is some chatter (albeit just internet talk) that he might get into the return mix, given the graduation of Mikey Henderson.

I love how physical he is at the WR position. Reminds me a little of Hines Ward in how he could be a dominant blocker. Here's hoping he becomes the next Hines. Would probably do well as a big hitting safety as well, which you just can't say about all receivers.

Brian Mimbs is sad.

FYI Hobnail, we did profile Mimbs earlier this year, albeit at another number. Check back through the archives. Certainly would not want to leave him out.
