Countdown to UGA-GSU: 20 Days

#20 Brandon Boykin, CB
5-10, 171, Fayetteville GA (Fayette County HS), True Freshman
Boykin was the top cornerback prospect in the state coming out of high school last year, and chose UGA over Georgia Tech, Duke and Ole Miss. A terrific athlete with a sub-4.5 40 time and close to a 40 inch vertical leap, Boykin plays much bigger and more physical than his size would indicate. Check out the video below for evidence, courtesy of Video Sports Scout:

The fact that he was a pretty good quarterback in high school and a terrific runner, as well as a track star at Fayette County, speaks to his outstanding athleticism. He is also an outstanding student, posting a 4.0 GPA in summer semester, and looks to be a very strong character guy.
Depth Chart Analysis: Boykin has been very impressive so far in fall camp. Richt has singled him out as coming onto campus in outstanding shape, and very prepared to handle the rigors of two-a-days. Given the spread offenses that the Dawgs will face this season (at least 5 teams on the Dawgs' schedule will run some version of the spread), a few DBs are going to have to step up other than the 1st and 2nd stringers. Boykin looks at this point to be one of those guys. In addition to perhaps becoming a major contributor on special teams, I expect to see Boykin on the field more and more as the season wears on. At the very least I think a redshirt is out of the question barring something unforeseen between now and the end of August. (Just my opinion based on the comments I've seen coming out of practice to this point.)

I'm glad he'll be the CB in the years to come. Hopefully those hops translate to the football field. Amanda Vanderpool
