Countdown to UGA-GSU: 13 Days

#13 Drew Butler, P
6-2, 205, Duluth GA (Peachtree Ridge HS), RS Freshman
The son of the best kicker in UGA history, Kevin Butler, committed to UGA after considering offers from Duke and Wake Forest. The Dawgs weren't able to offer until late in the recruiting process (January 2007), but Butler ultimately chose and signed with the Dawgs. Butler got into the mix for the starting punter job last season, but lost out to Brian Mimbs and was redshirted. Butler is also a fine student and was an All-SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll recipient.
Depth Chart Analysis: There were thoughts that Butler would perhaps challenge for the starting kicker job, but it appears that Blair Walsh has all but locked that up. Richt said earlier this week that Butler was pushing Brian Mimbs a little for the starting punter job, but it appears that he will merely back Mimbs up to start the season. Butler probably has a bigger leg than Mimbs, but Mimbs may be a little bit better at placing the ball where we need it. Butler's best chance of seeing the field this season may be to handle kickoffs. He's likely UGA's punter of the future once Mimbs graduates.
