Countdown to UGA-GSU: 40 Days

Brian Mimbs, P
5-11, 205, Dublin GA (Dublin HS), Sr.

After a solid career at one of Georgia's better high school football programs, Mimbs passed up a scholarship offer to play football and baseball at Middle Tennessee State to walk-on at Georgia (due in part to his late father's wishes to see his son wear the Red and Black.) After coming to UGA with an eye primarily on place kicking, he settled in as a punter at UGA, but redshirted in his first season and again saw no action in his 2nd season. As a redshirt sophomore, Mimbs began seeing action on kickoffs toward the end of the 2006 season after starter Brandon Coutu went down with a leg injury. Mimbs’ most memorable play was the on-side kick that he booted and recovered in the 2nd half of the Peach Bowl win over Virginia Tech. He also handled some of the holding duties toward the end of that season. In his first season as the full-time starting punter in 2007, he performed above and beyond anything that could have been expected (42+ yard average.) He was granted a scholarship recently for his senior year (very well deserved), and also learned this week that SEC Coaches have named him preseason 3rd team All-SEC punter. Mimbs shares the #26 with wide receiver Tony Wilson, which basically assures you that Wilson will not be the gunner on the punt team, nor will he see time on the extra point/field goal team this season.
Depth Chart Analysis: Mimbs has a firm grasp on the starting punting job, although he may get a slight push in August from redshirt freshman Drew Butler. His experience and good work at holder will make sure that he remains one of the Dawgs’ most important special teamers. Expect to see Mimbs as the special teams captain more than once this season.

Thanks Tom. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the countdown. We're getting down to "brass tacks" as they say.
