Countdown to UGA-GSU: 37 Days

#37 Akeem Hebron, LB
6-1, 225, Gaithersburg MD (Good Counsel HS), RS Sophomore
Hebron was one of the more highly recruited linebackers in the country coming out of high school in the 2006 signing class, choosing the Dawgs over Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Virginia Tech. A USA Today and Parade Magazine First Team All-American, Hebron was redshirted in his first season in Athens, then went through a tumultuous offseason that saw him arrested for underage possession of alcohol in February, and the same offense just 2 months later. In early May of 2007, Richt announced that Hebron would be suspended for the entire 2007 season, and eligible to return to Athens in early 2008. In the meantime, he played for Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, and put up solid numbers on a very good junior college defense. He also had a nice G-Day in his "Sanford Stadium debut", with 5 tackles and a 40 yard return of a fumble recovery. He appeared to me to be around the ball on every play, much like what you see from Rennie Curran.
Depth Chart Analysis: Hebron will have to earn his playing time, at least early in his career, given his past transgressions. He seems to be coming along really well, and is currently listed as 3rd string Will Linebacker, behind Curran and Darryl Gamble. However, he could easily get himself into the mix at Sam as well, and might even have a shot to push Akeem Dent for his starting spot if he is moved around. We'll know all of the answers in just a matter of weeks.
