Countdown to UGA-GSU: 33 Days

#33 Dannell Ellerbe, MLB
6-1, 232, Hamlet NC (Richmond HS), Sr.
Ellerbe came to UGA in 2004 as one of the top linebacker prospects in America, although vastly undersized at 180 lbs. There was talk that he'd wind up a safety at UGA, although the coaching staff knew there was potential for greatness at linebacker for Dannell. After putting on some weight and playing at LB as a redshirt freshman (14 tackles, 3 TFL, 2 sacks, 1 interception), Ellerbe ran afoul of the law in early January of 2006, with 4 offenses as a result of an alcohol related car accident in Athens. He was suspended for the first 3 games of the 2006 season, and got limited playing time the rest of the season, recording only 7 tackles. 2007 was a much better year for Dannell, as he came back to start 11 games across all 3 linebacker spots, finishing up as the team's leading tackler (93 tackles), and a 2nd team All-SEC selection. Ellerbe's senior year is shaping up to be a good one, as he's one of UGA's two preseason 1st team All-SEC selections, part of the Bronco Nagurski Award preseason watch list, and one of the senior leaders on the roster.
Depth Chart Analysis: Ellerbe is the "quarterback" of the defense, and the firm starter at Mike Linebacker. He really came into his own last season, and along with Rennie Curran forms one of the best (if not the best) linebacker tandem in the SEC. I'm looking for a big year from Ellerbe, and I expect we'll see him picked on the first day of the 2009 NFL Draft.

He & Rennie Curran are going to be fun to watch this year. Linebackers just aren't supposed to have the quickness these two have!
