"Real" Bad News

The AJC reports this morning that Brannon Southerland could miss up through the Alabama game after suffering a rehab setback related to recent foot surgery. I'd argue that there are probably only 2 other injuries on the roster that I might have wanted to see happen less at this point, certainly only 2 on offense. My opinion is that Southerland is the best fullback in the nation, the best NFL prospect at fullback in the nation, and the best true fullback UGA has had since Mack Strong.

This all leaves Shaun Chapas as the lone scholarship fullback in the 1st 2 games, thanks to Fred Munzenmaier's recent run-ins with Athens-Clarke County's "finest." The AJC Dawg Blog suggests that with Southerland and Munzenmaier out, and with 2 "relatively" easy contests to open the 2008 campaign, it would be a perfect time to see the Moreno/King combo on the field, and start working out the kinks of that scenario.

I'm interested to hear thoughts about how this will be addressed. Let's not underestimate the magnitude of this. Southerland was as important a cog as any on this roster. Given all the things UGA is up against this season...the schedule, the expectations, etc.....can the Dawgs afford a major injury to a key starter????

Good point that you just can't underestimate the importance of Southerland to this team. Might be the best pure football player on the team...straight out of the Tony Gilbert mold.

I really hate it for the kid. He had a real chance to shine on a national stage in Tempe, hopefully he'll still make the trip to provide support for the backups.

This could, however, be a great chance for the 2 back set ala AU '04.
