Countdown to UGA-GSU: 83 Days

Note: I noticed this morning that Cornelius Washington had actually been given #83, at least for the pre-summer roster. Since CW has been profiled already, we'll focus our efforts elsewhere today.

Zach Renner, SE
5-11, 180, Monroe CT (West Canaan HS), Soph.
Today we profile our first walk-on of the season. Renner hasn't yet seen the field for the Dawgs, but he did compile some nice numbers at West Canaan in the 2006-07 season, with 23 catches and 5 TDs at WR. He also played DB and returned kicks and punts in high school. He makes a nice contribution to the program in the area of academics, posting a 3.0+ GPA in spring 2008.
Depth Chart Analysis: Renner actually does get a mention in Phil Steele's 2008 College Football Preview (in newsstands now), under Georgia's WR summary. Still, given the sheer numbers at WR this year (10 scholarship WRs, every one of whom is expected to see some action), it is hard to imagine Renner getting in there unless it is mop-up duty. However, special teams is where we may see him contribute. Coach Jon Fabris and the rest of the special teams staff usually love to have 2-3 walk-ons playing special teams at all times, and Renner will no doubt have his opportunity to be one of those contributors.
