Countdown to UGA-GSU: 67 Days

Jonathan Owens, OG
6-5, 295, Horton AL (Susan Moore HS), True Freshman
Owens was a surprise to those who follow recruiting closely. Georgia was the first school to offer him a scholarship, with Georgia Tech, Troy, and UAB being the others that showed major interest. In the end, it was the early offer from UGA that led to a quick decision. Owens is massive for a true freshman. He played at 310 lbs as a high school senior, but said he wants to play at around 285 at UGA, meaning he still may have a few lbs to shed. That shouldn't be a problem, as what Dave Van Halanger wants out of somebody, he usually finds a way to get. From everything I've read on him, Owens seems to be one willing to work to get where he needs to be.
Depth Chart Analysis: 2008 looks to be a certain redshirt year for Owens. The Dawgs have no shortage of guards, and most likely Owens will need a year to get used to playing at a lower weight anyway. Still, the frame is there, and he's at UGA because Stacy Searles, Rodney Garner, and Mark Richt believe he is going to be a good one. Look for Owens to provide depth in 2009, and work his way into the regular rotation beyond that. All of the above said, I was saying the same thing about Clint Boling prior to 2007, and I could not have been more wrong.
